Organisation...

If there's one thing I wish I'd known before starting our family, it's just how much time and money I could have saved if only I'd been a bit better organised...

I'm not retracting one word of CRASH here; I still think that there is no way we should feel that we have to live by the Admen's standards, but I know we could have a home to be proud of, money in the bank to cover emergencies and at possibly even a little holiday each year if I could make our resources stretch that little bit further. And just imagine the luxury of NOT having too much month at the end of your money...

Actually I suspect that most of us have excellent organisational skills & would find running a multinational company positively restful. But we have to achieve far more with the same resources as "ordinary" families and I'm only too aware that I have several "blind spots" that could be improved on to make life easier for me and better for my whole family. So forgive me if you feel I'm teaching my grandmother to suck eggs, then email me and share your secrets!

Living in a society that runs on "growth", we have been brought up to see money as the only resource worth considering. But possibly the resource that we are all most in need of more of is actually TIME. Time to relax, time to listen to each other and our children, time to reflect on things and pick up the clues that we might otherwise miss. Maybe even time to hunt for the missing shoe at school time in the morning...

I have noticed that it is far easier for me to save money when I have enough time at my disposal - time to shop intelligently, time to compare interest rates & "special offers", time to cook properly and grow some of our food. And there's more time to play with if I can manage to keep on top of the clutter, (and the kids' homework!) and I don't end up buying the same thing twice over because I can't find the first one...

My family will howl with laughter at the thought of me presuming to tell anyone else how to get organised! So the pages on the right, although containing a few ideas of mine, will start off mostly as collections of links to other useful sites. I'd love to add in your ideas - please email me with any tips and I will pass them on. And probably benefit from trying them out, too, in the name of research!
