Celebrations...

One thing about living in a larger family - there's always something to celebrate! Apart from all the usual festivites, we simply have more birthdays, exam results, homecomings and special days than most. So how to celebrate it all in style on a tight budget? It can be done, with a bit of imagination, ingenuity and a good sense of humour!

It's as well to say here that I have a fair amount of experience of how NOT to do it, too - hopefully we can all learn from my mistakes!

Click on the images on the right to see some ideas that have worked for us - please send your ideas either by email or on the bulletin boards, and I'll do my best to add them in. Being a Christian I'm planning to include all of our special occasions, but I'll gladly add in ideas from other traditions if you send them in.

For mini-celebrations, such as when a child comes home from a school trip, I always do a "Welcome Home" banner to stick across our hallway, using a print program that came free with a magazine (Sierra's Print Artist 4), and try to cook their favourite meal and make sure their bedroom's been tidied while they've been away - this last item often defeats me!

None of mine have yet taken any GCSEs or major exams - and of course there might not be anything to celebrate when they have, but I hope so! - so I'm interested to see what other people have come up with. Some of my sons' contemporaries have been promised computers of their own if they "get into" the local grammar, and are being "crammed" like mad - this seems a bit OTT to me, (what bribe do you use next time?) and I hope that mine will do their best because they want to and they know it's always the right thing to do. Our son politely refused to sit the test when it came down to it - he wanted to follow his brother to our excellent local comprehensive, and we have respected his wishes as he is a sensible & hardworking lad.

Sarah's all partied out!

I will add to this as we go along; New Year & Easter will follow in due course. Let me know what else you'd like to see!
